The IP addresses of your VPS
What you get: understand which address your server has, what is the main one, and why changing it in the panel does not update anything inside the machine.
What you need to know before touching anything
The IPs screen is a mirror, not a remote control. The panel reflects the actual configuration of your machines: you cannot enter it to change it. If you want to change the IP of your server, it is changed inside the operating system, and as soon as you do, it will appear here alone.
This is not a stupid limitation: when the panel did enter to change it, in Windows it replaced the address and took the default path ahead of it, leaving the server disconnected.
Your VPS requires a mandatory dedicated public IPv4 address. It is delivered with the server and billed as a separate recurring item: €6 per month or €72 per year. Each additional address is another add-on, with its own price and reverse DNS on request.
See the addresses
IPs and network menu. You will see, for each server, its addresses and two labels that you should read:
primary or secondary - the main one is «the one that carries the gateway». Without it the server does not go out to the internet.
detected or reserved - detected is read from the machine itself; reserved is entered manually and not confirmed by the machine.
Refresh inventory asks the machines again and updates the list.
Request an additional IP
Order now menu, supplements section, additional public IP.
It is assigned when ordered and released when you cancel it.
If you need reverse DNS for that address, ask for it by ticket saying what name you want it to return.
How to check it worked
Log in to the server and type ip a: that’s the truth. Compare it with what the panel says after pressing Refresh inventory; they have to match.
To check that it goes out to the internet, from inside: ping -c3 1.1.1.1. If it responds, the default route is fine.
Common problems
- I have changed the IP in the panel and inside the machine the old one is still there
The panel does not change it. Change it inside, in the system network settings, and then press “Refresh inventory” here.
- “That address is not available. Choose another one from the list”
You have requested an address that belongs to another machine, the gateway, or it is reserved. Choose one of the ones that appear free.
- «That is your server’s primary address and it cannot be removed separately»
The primary address provides internet access and is a mandatory part of the VPS contract. You can cancel additional addresses; the primary one is cancelled together with the server.
- I removed an IP from the panel and the server still has it
Removing it here only stops documenting it: the machine’s network card does not erase itself. Remove it inside as well.
- I added a network card and it doesn’t have an address
It’s what you expect: the card is added and the address is configured from within the machine.
- I want a second IP and it tells me that it is not included in my plan
Your VPS already has its mandatory primary address, billed as a separate line item. A second address is another paid add-on. You can find it under Subscribe, or contact us and we will set it up.
- I need the IP to resolve my domain name backwards on my behalf
That is the reverse DNS and it is not configured from the panel. Ask for it by ticket with the address and name.
- Can I choose which VLAN my server goes to?
No: the network, with its gateway, is configured by itself when creating the server. If your case needs something special, tell us and we’ll see.
