Managed databases for Projects and VPS

What you get: a PostgreSQL, a MariaDB or a Redis set up and maintained by us, that plugs into your projects with one click and whose connection address is added automatically in the environment variables.

Before starting

If what you have is a website, you probably don’t need this. The panel says it bluntly: “You don’t need any for your Sites: MariaDB and phpMyAdmin are already included”. This is for Projects and for your VPS.

They are billed per database, per month, and they are ordered separately. Each plan you contract gives you one place; when you use it, to create another you need another place.

Steps

  1. Projects → Databases menu.

  2. If there are no more available seats, press Order another first.

  3. Create database:

    • Engine — PostgreSQL, MariaDB or Redis.

    • Name - in lowercase, with numbers and hyphens, starting with a letter. It ends up being an address within the cluster, that’s why it’s so strict.

    • Plan - only those with a free spot will be accepted.

  4. When you start, in your card you have the connection address.

Plug it into a project

In the database details page, Plug in: you choose the project and the name of the variable, which by default is DATABASE_URL. From there the project has it in its environment without you copying it anywhere.

Change the password

Change the password generates a new one and updates it automatically in the plugged-in projects. The engine starts using it when it restarts. If the base is also on a VPS or in your own script, you have to change those yourself.

How to check it worked

Look at it from the project, not from the database details page. Deploy and check that the application is really connecting. If not, in the database details page you have its status and log, which are updated automatically every few seconds.

Common problems

“There are no more places left in this plan”

Each slot is one database. Order another from “Order another” and create it in a minute.

“The name is in lowercase, with numbers and hyphens, and starts with a letter”

The name ends up being a network address within the cluster, and there they are not capitalized, dots or hyphens.

«We have created it but it has not started»

Check its status after a moment: it almost always starts automatically. If it continues the same way, write to us.

I changed the password and my VPS no longer connects

The new password is readded automatically in the plugged-in projects, but not in your VPSs or your scripts. You update those by hand.

My project does not see the DATABASE_URL variable

Check that the base is plugged into that project and that the name of the variable is the one your application reads. After the change you have to redeploy.

Can I make the database larger?

The size is determined by the plan; you cannot choose it separately. For more space, order a larger plan and migrate the data.

Does Redis keep my data forever?

Redis is for caching. Don’t use it as a store for what you can’t afford to lose: for that, use PostgreSQL or MariaDB.

I want to recover a datadatadatadatabase from yesterday

We support them, but there is no restore button. Ask for it by ticket with the name of the base and the date.

I want to delete it

On your form, the danger area. You have to write your exact name: it is the only thing that prevents you from deleting the one that was not.
