Your domain’s DNS

What you get: your domain pointing wherever you want — your website here, email somewhere else, a subdomain for testing.

DNS is your domain’s address book: it says which address goes with each name. You don’t need to understand how it works inside, only what to change.

First of all: is your DNS here?

You can only edit the zone if your domain’s name servers point to ours. Check it in Projects ‣ Domains, under Name servers.

If your domain is with another registrar and you want to keep it that way, you have to change the records there, not here. The Point your domain here guide explains it step by step.

The records you will use

Type

What for

Example

A

Point a name at an IP address

www → 203.0.113.10

CNAME

Make one name an alias of another

tienda → mitienda.example.com

MX

Where the domain’s email is received

@ → mail.hostbrid.com

TXT

Verification text: SPF, DKIM, Google, Microsoft

@ → v=spf1 include:...

The @ means “the bare domain”, with nothing in front of it.

Changing something

In My sites, on your site’s row, go into the domain’s DNS configuration. There you have the table with Type, Name, Value and what is published Now.

You edit with the pencil on each row and delete with the bin. The Check everything button checks, one by one, whether what is published matches what it should be.

Note

Changes are not immediate. Every record has a time to live (TTL) and servers all over the world have the previous reply stored. It normally shows up within minutes, but it can take hours.

If you are going to move something important, lower the TTL a day before: that way the change spreads fast when the time comes.

Warning

Email breaks here more often than anywhere else. If you touch the MX, SPF (a TXT on @) or DKIM records, your email may stop arriving or start landing in spam with no warning at all. If you don’t know what a record does, don’t delete it: ask us in a ticket.

Automating it

hostbrid dns-zones list
hostbrid dns-records list --filtro zone=4
hostbrid dns-records create zone=4 name=www type=A value=203.0.113.10

Creating records needs the sitios:escribir permission, which you request in a ticket. See The API, for automating your account.

Common problems

I changed the record and I still see the old one

It’s the cache. Try from your mobile on mobile data, not on wifi, or wait. To check it for real: dig www.tudominio.com @ns1.hostbrid.com.

My website works but my email doesn’t

Check the MX records. If your email is with Google or Microsoft, their MX records have to be in place, and the SPF too.

It won’t let me edit the zone

The domain’s DNS is not here. You can leave it that way and create the records at your provider (Your DNS at another provider: what to add and how to write it there) or bring it over to us (Point your domain here).
